Other Highlights include: The Queen Mary Ocean liner, Hearst Castle, Wine Tasting Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, California Redwoods, the Culinary Institute of America.

Monday, June 8: Depart from your home area to San Diego arriving in the early afternoon to transfer and check into our San Diego hotel. The afternoon is free to enjoy strolling through the Gas Lamp Quarter, enjoy the California sun at the hotel pool, or be adventurous and hop in a cab to enjoy other parts of the city. This evening we celebrate our arrival in California with a special group welcome dinner. (D)

Tuesday, June 9: This morning after breakfast in our hotel, we travel to Mission San Diego Acala, the first California Mission established. After celebrating Mass in the Mission Church, we will have a tour of the entire mission compound. Our group is then transferred to Old Town San Diego for free time and an independent lunch. Afterwards, we tour the city with a local guide with stops at Balboa Park and Coronado Island with the famous beach front Del Coronado Hotel. Returning to our hotel, the remainder of the late afternoon and evening is free. (B, D)

Wednesday, June 10: This morning we depart San Diego and begin the journey up the Mission Trail arriving at Mission San Juan Capistrano. We will celebrate Mass in the Mission Chapel, the oldest in-use structure in California. Afterwards, we will tour the spectacular gardens and the ruins of the larger mission church destroyed by an earthquake. After an independent lunch and time to stroll the quaint town, we travel to Long Beach to tour the historic Queen Mary ocean liner on our way Santa Barbara. This evening is free for an independent dinner to walk the pier, stroll the beach or State Street in Santa Barbara. (B)

Thursday, June 11: After breakfast, we arrive at Mission Santa Barbara for Mass and to tour “The Queen of the Missions.” After time for an independent lunch, we depart in the early afternoon to tour the beautiful Danish community of Solvang in the Santa Ynez valley. The Solvang community is totally built in the architectural Danish design and was founded by two Danish school teachers in the early 1900's. Returning to Santa Barbara by late afternoon, you may choose to return to the hotel or stop at the Santa Barbara Winery Tasting Room before heading out to dinner. (B)

Friday, June 12: This morning after breakfast, we depart Santa Barbara and drive north along the El Camino Real, The Royal Road, to San Luis Obispo. Continuing along Pacific Highway 1, we arrive at Hearst Castle. After an independent lunch at the visitor’s center, we tour the California home of William Randolph Hearst. The legendary estate boasts 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, pools, terraces, and walkways along with an impressive art collection. After our time at Hearst Castle, we
continue north on Highway 1 along the Pacific Ocean to Big Sur and take a short break at Julia Pfeifer State Park. This stop offers the opportunity to walk through and view the beauty of nature as the mountains meet the sea and the redwoods soar to the sky. Take time for a short hike or a rest at the park’s lodge. Afterward, we continue to the Carmel-by-the-Sea where we check into our hotel and have dinner together at a local
restaurant. (B, D)

Saturday, June 13: After breakfast at our hotel but before we depart Carmel, we will celebrate Mass and tour Mission Charles Borromeo de Carmelo, the most important of all the 21 missions. The founder of the missions, Fr. Junipero Serra died and was laid to rest in front of the
altar. On leaving Carmel, we depart for San Francisco, an independent lunch and then a guided tour of the “City by the Bay” before checking into our hotel. (B)

Sunday, June 14: This morning, after breakfast in our hotel, we
will attend Sunday Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis at Mission San Francisco. Afterwards, we have time for an independent lunch before boarding our ship to Alcatraz Island. Once on the island, you will receive an individual audio system and start your individual tour of the famous island prison which once housed some of America’s most famous prisoners: Robert Stroud aka the Birdman of Alcatraz, Machine Gun Kelly, and the most famous - Al Capone. After returning to the mainland, our coach will cross the Golden Gate Bridge on the way to Napa Valley. This evening we will have dinner together in the famous wine producing valley.

Monday, June 15: After breakfast, we begin a full day excursion
in Napa Valley with several wine tastings and visits to local
wineries. The day concludes with dinner at one of Napa Valley’s
more notable restaurants. (B, D)

Tuesday, June 16: Before departing for Sonoma County, we have breakfast at our hotel. Once in Sonoma County, we will visit Gloria Ferrier’s beautiful winery where we will sample some of the finest of California’s champagne with unparalleled views. We will return to our hotel by mid afternoon for some time to relax before sharing our farewell dinner together at the Culinary Institute of America. (B, D)

Wednesday, June 17: After breakfast at our hotel, we make our
way to San Francisco’s International Airport for our flights back
home. (B)

Please note: This trip requires each traveler to be able to walk to and from many sights and/or restaurants. Several sights also include many stairs, uneven, steep, and rocky walks. If you have difficulty standing, climbing stairs, and/or walking, you will experience difficulty on this trip.
